Ballerina Perseveres After Bone Cancer

Kara Ballerina

Chattanooga, Tennessee—

A twenty-one year old, Kara Skrubis, has been dancing since she was three years old. In late 2019, she woke up one day to pain in her left leg. When it didn’t get better in the new year she went to see a doctor. In January 2020, Skrubis was diagnosed with a common bone cancer called osteosarcoma. As a freshman in college and as a dance major at the University of Buffalo she was told she needed a leg amputation. She began chemo therapy and just four short months later, surgery for her leg amputation and by September she received her prosthetic leg. After two years of rehabilitation, Kara is dancing again!
