Charlize Theron opens up about her Mother killing her Father

by: Natalie Gard

Charlize Theron is one of the biggest actresses in the world right now. She’s a unique performer from everything from “Snow White and the Huntsmen” to “Fast and Furious” 8 and 9 to her latest film, “Bombshell.” What you may not know about Charlize is that her mother, Gerda, killed her father, Charles. And she is not afraid of speaking openly about it.

When she was a child, her father was an abusive alcoholic. Her mother, Gerda, was a victim of domestic violence by Charles. One night, after a long binge of drinking, her father came home with a gun and was belligerent. Charlize’s Mother locked them both in a bedroom of their home, while her father tried to beat down the door. During the altercation her father shot at the door, while Charlize and her mom were barricading it. Luckily neither of them were hit. Gerda sprang into action, grabbed her own gun and shot Charles in self defense.

Here’s what Charlize has to say about her childhood trauma now. “My father was so drunk that he shouldn’t have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun,” she says. “My mom and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door, because he was trying to push through the door. So both of us were leaning against the door from the inside to have him not be able to push through. He took a step back and just shot through the door three times. None of those bullets ever hit us, which is just a miracle,” she adds. “But in self-defense, she ended the threat.”

Charlize is very open about the fact her mother killed her father, she say’s because it helps shed light on the issue. “This family violence, this kind of violence that happens within the family, is something that I share with a lot of people. I’m not ashamed to talk about it, because I do think that the more we talk about these things, the more we realize we are not alone in any of it I think, for me, it’s just always been that this story really is about growing up with addicts and what that does to a person.”
