Team USA held onto its gold medal lead yesterday, but it could be a tight race to the finish.
Wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt won her gold medal match, the cycling team finally scored gold in women’s team pursuit after 12 years of silver and bronze, and sprinter Quincy Hall had a dramatic come-from-behind win in the men’s 400-meters.
We also snagged a bronze in men’s weightlifting, plus four silver medals in men’s skateboarding, women’s pole vault, men’s steeplechase, and an upside-down moonwalk routine was good enough for silver in synchronized swimming.
The overall medal race seems like it’s more or less settled now. After Day 12, the U.S. had 94, and China was next with 65. But the gold medal race is still very much up in the air.
Coming into today, Team USA had 27 golds. Then China, 25, Australia, 18, France, 13, and 12 each for Great Britain, South Korea, and Japan.
