This year, Running of the Chihuahuas 16 proudly benefits the Humane Educational Society (HES), an organization that has been a pillar of hope and a sanctuary for homeless pets in Hamilton County since its inception in 1910. Founded by the compassionate Ethel Hardy, who famously rescued stray animals as she navigated the streets of Chattanooga in her carriage, HES has grown immensely, now welcoming and caring for four to five thousand pets each year.
As an open-door facility, the Humane Educational Society serves as a vital resource for residents within its community, offering essential adoption services, animal protection, pet licensing, and thorough cruelty investigations. Each animal that arrives at HES receives the utmost care, compassion, and respect, underscoring their commitment to finding loving homes for every treatable, adoptable, and trainable animal under their guardianship. Their mission is not only to shelter these animals but also to transform Hamilton County into a haven for pets through education and community engagement.
Gino D of Hits 96 and ROTC16 performer Sarah Mootz recently visited the Humane Educational Society, highlighting the importance of community involvement in supporting the organization’s mission. Together, they showcased the incredible work being done at HES and the exceptional animals awaiting new homes. This visit not only drew attention to the animals in need but also emphasized the vital role that education plays in promoting animal welfare.
The Humane Educational Society strives to lead by example, setting a high standard in providing compassionate and healing care for the animals in their custody. They make every effort to educate the public about animal welfare principles, actively encouraging community members to participate in creating a brighter future for pets. By fostering responsible pet ownership and raising awareness about the importance of adoption, HES is dedicated to making a positive difference.
