As Memorial Day approaches, the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council is organizing efforts to honor fallen service members by placing and retiring flags at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., volunteers will gather to carefully place flags on nearly 50,000 graves across the cemetery, a meaningful tribute to those who served. Following the holiday, on Saturday, May 31st, at the same time, the flags will be respectfully retired.

Community members interested in participating are encouraged to join the effort. Volunteers should arrive at the cemetery promptly at 8 a.m. Parking will be available on-site.

To volunteer, individuals can call 756-2212 or reach out directly to organizers, including retired Navy Captain Mickey McCamish at mickey@riverbendfestival.com, retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Scott Hardin at hshardin@epbfi.com, or Bill Norton, Chairman of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council and U.S. Marine Corps retiree, at bill@metroservicesinc.com. Groups interested in volunteering can also coordinate to work on specific sections of the cemetery.

This annual event is a heartfelt way for the community to honor those who served and sacrificed for the nation.
