Walnut Street Bridge Renovation Continues with Key Phase in Preservation Efforts

In The Know with Gino…

The ongoing renovation of the historic Walnut Street Bridge is making steady progress as crews embark on a critical new phase aimed at preserving and restoring this beloved Chattanooga landmark. Beginning this week, work shifts focus to the northern span of the bridge, bringing the project closer to completion.

Construction crews have begun installing protective tarps over span six in carefully planned half-span increments. This process involves constructing a sealed containment area and setting up specialized hoses and vacuum equipment to create a secure, environmentally responsible environment for surface work. This controlled environment is essential for the safe removal of old paint and surface materials, ensuring the preservation of the bridge’s historic integrity.

Starting tomorrow, sandblasting operations will commence within the containment zones, followed immediately by the application of a new protective coating system. Each section of the bridge will receive multiple layers—primer, intermediate coat, and topcoat—to safeguard against rust and weathering. The process is designed to be efficient, minimizing exposure of bare metal and ensuring the longevity of the restoration.

Once span six is fully treated, crews will move on to the next viaduct, repeating the sequence of sandblasting and painting. This systematic approach allows for careful progress and ensures the entire structure is restored with high-quality materials.

City officials and project partners continue to appreciate the community’s support as this vital infrastructure project advances. The Walnut Street Bridge, a cherished icon of Chattanooga’s history and skyline, is being carefully restored to remain safe, beautiful, and accessible for generations to come.

The project remains on schedule for completion in Fall 2026. For more updates and information, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit WALNUTSTREETBRIDGE.COM.
