Dental Experts Warn Sour Halloween Candy Poses Greatest Threat To Tooth Enamel

Dental professionals caution that sour candies present the most dangerous Halloween treat for teeth due to their extreme acidity levels. Nadine Tassabehji, assistant professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, states “These candies combine two factors that increase mouth acidity and accelerate enamel erosion.” Sour candy contains citric, malic, tartaric and fumaric acids that weaken tooth enamel by pulling calcium and potassium from teeth. Sticky varieties create prolonged exposure, with Tassabehji noting “That sticky, acidic and sugary mix is a recipe for trouble.” Despite health concerns, sour candy sales have jumped 70% over the past decade, driven partly by social media challenges. A Penn State University study found 1 in 8 adults enjoy intensely sour sensations. Experts recommend rinsing with water immediately after consumption and waiting thirty minutes before brushing teeth.
