Woman Fired Her Lawyer On ChatGPT’s Advice

Nippon Life Insurance Company of America filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI in Chicago, alleging ChatGPT illegally practiced law without a license. The insurer claims a disability claimant used the AI chatbot to challenge a settled case that was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it couldn’t be refiled. According to the complaint, ChatGPT incorrectly advised the woman her settlement wasn’t final, contradicting her attorney’s guidance. She subsequently fired her lawyer and relied on the chatbot to draft new motions and file another lawsuit. “ChatGPT is not an attorney,” the lawsuit states, arguing the AI lacks admission to practice in any US jurisdictions. Nippon reports spending approximately $300,000 responding to what it calls baseless court filings generated by the chatbot’s advice. OpenAI dismissed the lawsuit as meritless, noting updated policies now prohibit using ChatGPT for legal advice.
