Chattanooga Room in the Inn has introduced a new pilot initiative aimed at supporting homeless and housing-insecure teenagers in Hamilton County. The Unaccompanied Youth Program is designed to provide safe shelter, stability, and comprehensive assistance for youth aged 16 to 18 who are not in the custody of a parent or guardian.

This innovative program is a collaborative effort with Hamilton County Schools, targeting young people who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability while ensuring they remain connected to their education. The initiative emphasizes trauma-informed care, life skills development, and long-term stability, offering a pathway toward independence.

The program’s core services include providing secure shelter for unaccompanied youth, coordinating with local schools to promote academic continuity, and offering tutoring and mentorship to encourage graduation. Additionally, individualized case management connects youth with healthcare, mental health resources, and benefits, while life skills training focuses on financial literacy and decision-making. Emotional and behavioral support tailored to trauma is also a key component, helping youth navigate their challenges healthily.

Hamilton County Schools will play a vital role in identifying eligible students through their Families in Transition office, facilitating ongoing monitoring of progress, and linking youth with additional resources. Currently, during the pilot phase, the program is serving 18-year-olds while pursuing necessary licensing to expand its reach.

The initiative aims to address the significant barriers faced by homeless youth in completing high school and transitioning into adulthood. The program’s broader goal is to create a stable environment where young people can focus on education, develop independence, and work toward a brighter future.

This effort aligns with CRITI’s mission to empower women and children experiencing homelessness by providing housing, support, and hope. Community members and organizations interested in supporting or expanding the program are encouraged to reach out to Chattanooga Room in the Inn for more information.
