A teenage athlete from Hixson is set to represent the United States on the international stage. Sixteen-year-old Lydia Hughes has earned her spot on Team USA and will compete at the upcoming World Freestyle and Rhythmic Twirl Championship in Paris this summer.

Hughes secured her place in the competition by winning the Junior Pairs event at the U.S. Trials held in South Carolina, where she performed alongside her partner, Shay Busza. The international event, scheduled for August, attracts top baton twirling athletes from around the globe and is regarded as the sport’s most prestigious competition.

The sport of baton twirling has seen significant evolution, moving away from its traditional image. Experts describe it as an aerobic discipline that combines athleticism with artistic expression, requiring performers to demonstrate speed, coordination, and flexibility.

Hughes has dedicated much of her life to the sport, having twirled for 14 years. She is currently a sophomore at Boyd-Buchanan School, where she also participates as a cheerleader and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society.

In the lead-up to her trip to Paris, Hughes will compete in regional and national championships this summer, continuing her preparations for the world competition.
