McKamey Animal Center (MAC) is currently facing an urgent crisis, with its shelter housing nearly 220% of its intended capacity. The facility, designed to comfortably care for around 275 animals, now holds over 600, with additional animals arriving daily in need of shelter.

This is an unprecedented situation for us,” said MAC Executive Director Inga Fricke. “We’re reaching out to the community for help. If you’ve been considering adopting a pet, now is the perfect time. For those unable to adopt, fostering a pet temporarily can make a huge difference. Even sharing our animals on social media can help us find them homes.”

To alleviate the overcrowding, MAC has announced that all animals will be available for FREE adoption through the end of the month. The shelter is also offering pre-adoption and foster options for animals that aren’t quite ready for permanent homes. Additionally, this Saturday at 1 PM, the organization will host a special “behind the scenes” tour of areas typically closed to the public, showcasing many highly adoptable animals that are currently hidden from view due to space constraints.

The center is also seeking community assistance in rescuing stray animals. Often, these strays are not lost but are neighborhood pets that have wandered. Community members are encouraged to hold onto found animals, canvass nearby homes, post on social media, and distribute flyers. Finders should report the animal immediately at mckameyanimalcenter.org/lost-found-pets and work to reunite pets with their owners as quickly as possible.

Founded in 2008, McKamey Animal Center’s mission is to save animals and help people. The organization aims to eliminate overpopulation, cruelty, and neglect through community engagement, education, and compassionate care. For more information or to get involved, visit MCKAMEYANIMALCENTER.ORG.
