Tomorrow is National Beer Day and to celebrate, you can crack open your favorite brew, even if you go the non-alcoholic route. But in the future, it could be some kind of weird, healthy beer drink.
A new article in Men’s Fitness says the next wellness drink trend could be “functional beer.” What is that? Well, are you sure you want to know?
It’s basically a “beer” that’s either non-alcoholic or low-ABV… that’s also FORTIFIED with good vitamins and supplements… quote, “adaptogens like ashwagandha and reishi for stress, nootropics like L-theanine and caffeine for calm focus, as well as botanicals, electrolytes, and even probiotics.”
This seems ridiculous, but it wouldn’t be surprising. There are a lot of new drinks popping up… that promote the idea of a “feel-good buzz, without the booze.” So this would just be a hoppy, beer-like version of that.
It’ll be interesting to see if any “functional beers” are able to take off.
Experts have been saying people drink less these days, especially younger adults. But even still, non-alcoholic beer hasn’t lit the world on fire.
There are several issues… including high price points, mediocre taste, and generally having more calories than they’re worth.
Some non-drinkers would rather just have something different, like a sparkling water or a Diet Coke, than feel the need to have a fake-beer to fit in socially.
