A third-grade student at Mayfield Elementary in Cleveland, TN has captured the hearts of over 1.3 million viewers after performing a powerful rendition of Journey’s classic hit “Don’t Stop Believin’” during his school’s district convocation earlier this month.
Dorian Diaz, an ESL student known for his vibrant personality and love of music, performed in front of approximately 1,000 teachers and staff members. His energetic presentation was recorded by the district’s new principal, Keri Miles, and quickly uploaded to the school’s Facebook page, where it gained widespread attention.

The performance was part of a district effort to showcase talent from various grade levels. Assistant Principal Jay Garcia recalled how he immediately thought of Dorian when selecting performers, noting the student’s previous participation in the school’s talent show. Garcia worked with Dorian’s mother to have him return to school a week early for the special appearance.
Garcia emphasized the significance of the performance as a message of hope and perseverance for educators returning to school. Dorian, who sometimes struggles with communication, shines when expressing himself through music, according to district officials. His mother highlighted his enthusiasm for singing as a universal language that brings out his personality.
The clip’s success has spotlighted Dorian’s talent and the district’s commitment to diversity and student success.
While Dorian and his teachers hope for a call from Journey, the young performer is already preparing for his next big stage—a performance of Bruno Mars’ “Risk It All.” District leaders say Dorian embodies the core values of Cleveland City Schools: offering every student the opportunity to succeed.
