As hospitals in the Chattanooga region face ongoing challenges in maintaining adequate blood inventories, Blood Assurance has announced a targeted effort to encourage donations during the upcoming holiday period.

From today August 31st, through Tuesday, September 8th, donors will receive a $40 electronic gift card as a token of appreciation for their contribution to ensuring local hospitals have the blood they need.

This initiative comes at a critical time when blood supplies across the country are running dangerously low, and local centers have been operating with less than a two-day reserve. Healthcare providers emphasize the importance of maintaining a minimum three-day supply to effectively handle emergencies, surgeries, and unexpected injuries.

The campaign coincides with the approach of National Preparedness Month, a nationwide reminder of the importance of readiness for emergencies. For Blood Assurance, that preparedness translates into having sufficient blood stocks on hand before increased travel and activity during the Labor Day weekend, which often results in more accidents and trauma cases.

Hospitals rely heavily on pre-collected, tested blood to be available immediately when patients arrive with injuries or require urgent surgeries. Ensuring a steady supply requires ongoing community participation, as blood cannot be stockpiled quickly in emergencies.

In addition to the gift card, donors during the period of September 1st  through the 15th will also receive a commemorative 9/11-themed T-shirt, commemorating national resilience and unity.

Blood Assurance supplies the majority of the blood, plasma, and platelets for hospitals across Chattanooga and surrounding areas. The organization highlights that it needs more than 540 donors daily to meet ongoing patient needs.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Donors are advised to eat iron-rich foods, stay well-hydrated, avoid caffeine before donating, and bring a valid photo ID.

To participate or find a donation location, residents can visit bloodassurance.org or call 800-962-0628. As a nonprofit serving multiple states, Blood Assurance continues its mission to provide a safe and sufficient blood supply for every patient in need.
