Brazilian Man Sells Everything To Meet ‘Girlfriend’ Who Turns Out To Be AI

A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer sold all his belongings to travel over 1,200 miles to meet a woman who turned out to be an AI-generated persona. Edimar Rocha Martins first discovered “Jéssica Oliveira” in 2020, believing her to be real. This month, he sold everything to fund a trip from Maranhão to Belo Horizonte after the AI persona posted a video seeking a man to move onto her farm. “I sold all of my things, I got rid of everything,” Martins said. Upon arrival, a local radio station informed him the woman didn’t exist. City social services later helped him return home. The account operator confirmed the persona was fabricated for engagement. “I have never spoken to anyone with this profile,” the AI-generated persona stated in a follow-up video.
