News Channel 9 reports that the demolition of AT&T Field is set to commence this Thursday, signifying the end of an era for Chattanooga’s iconic ballpark. The project marks the beginning of a major transformation as the site prepares to become Hawk Hill, a vibrant new mixed-use neighborhood in downtown Chattanooga.
The demolition process is expected to last approximately 12 weeks, with crews already on-site preparing for the extensive work. The initial phase will involve removing the stadium’s recognizable scoreboard, followed by careful dismantling of the structure. Once the ballpark is fully taken down, the area will be temporarily converted into green space, with grading, reseeding, and ongoing maintenance planned until construction on the new development begins.
This transition follows years of planning after the Chattanooga Lookouts relocated to their new home at Erlanger Park. For many local residents, AT&T Field holds a special place in their memories, serving as a backdrop for decades of community gatherings and sporting events. The stadium also hosted memorable moments, including games featuring future Major League Baseball stars like Elly De La Cruz.
In a bid to preserve parts of the stadium’s legacy, many components and memorabilia have already been auctioned off to the public. River City Company President Emily Mack highlighted that numerous pieces have found new homes, ensuring some of the stadium’s history remains in the community.
Looking ahead, River City Company envisions Hawk Hill as a dynamic destination that will feature residential housing, restaurants, retail spaces, offices, hotels, and public gathering areas. Community plans emphasize creating a walkable neighborhood with parks, trails, sidewalks, and green spaces, as well as an outdoor music venue. The development aims to maintain scenic views, enhance pedestrian connectivity between downtown, the riverfront, and the hilltop, and incorporate visual and sound barriers along U.S. 27 to reduce noise and improve aesthetics.
The project may also include a mix of affordable, workforce, and market-rate housing options, alongside additional parking facilities to support the neighborhood’s growth. River City Company is actively seeking a master developer to bring this vision to life and is coordinating the project with the city’s new riverfront parks initiative, ensuring both developments complement each other.
