Florida Officer Arrested For Impersonating Dead Man, Seizing His Home

A Florida police officer who responded to a welfare check discovered a dead man — then according to police, stole his identity and took over his home. Brian Louis Sguros, 35, a Lauderhill Police Department officer, was arrested on multiple felony charges after investigators say he impersonated Dennis West, 71, who was found dead in July 2022. Sguros allegedly told the medical examiner’s office he was West’s friend and falsely claimed West had no living family. He then took possession of the home, spending what he claimed was $214,000 on renovations. He also paid taxes and utilities in West’s name and forged his signature on a city permit. Sguros was ordered held on a $25,000 bond and placed on administrative leave without pay.
