Four Ways to Stop A.I. from Ruining Your Brain

A staff writer for “The Atlantic” did a story on how A.I. is already breaking our brains.  There’s clear evidence we’re not thinking for ourselves as much as we used to. Here are a few techniques to try if you want to prevent it.

1.  Ask for hints, not answers.  “People who ask A.I. to directly answer their questions suffer severe declines in motivation and ability.  But people who ask A.I. for background thinking or clarifications do not.”

2.  Start with a blank page.  When you want its take on something, “Write up your own analysis and conclusions.  Then ask A.I. to challenge your thinking, not produce it.”

3.  Rotate tasks.  “Every time you do a task with A.I., follow it with a task that doesn’t involve A.I.  That will keep your creative-effort muscles alive.”

4.  Make a sharp distinction between rote work and creative work.  Let A.I. write quick emails.  Don’t let it write your essays or your memos.
