Is the Airport Liquid Rule “Security Theater”?

How many times have you stood at airport security frantically checking every little bottle in your bag to make sure they’re 3.4 ounces or less?  Or had to dump your whole water out, only to refill it after you get through TSA?

Well, you’re not going to like hearing this.  A security expert from Harvard says the liquid rule that travelers have dealt with for nearly 20 years is basically “security theatre”.

Here’s how he put it: “If I walk through airport security with a gun and they find it, they ruin my day.  If I walk through security with a bottle of liquid and they find it, they throw it in the trash and let me through . . .

“Here’s something so dangerous that you can’t take it on an airplane, yet so safe that [officers] will throw it in the trash next to them.”

The liquid rule was introduced in 2006 after a plot involving liquid explosives.  But many airports are now dropping the restriction as new scanner technology rolls out.  Here’s hoping that someday your shampoo can finally travel stress-free.
