Netflix Is Ending Its DVD-by-Mail Business

Netflix

Talk about the end of an era:  Netflix is ending its DVD-by-mail business after 25 years.  And yes, people ARE still getting DVDs by mail from Netflix.  But not for much longer.

The last of those red envelopes will be mailed out September 29th … and will have to be returned by October 27th.

Netflix says, quote, “To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you. Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members, but as the DVD business continues to shrink, that’s going to become increasingly difficult.”

Netflix also announced that they’ll be phasing in their “paid sharing” plan in the coming weeks, which is a less aggressive way to say that they’re cracking down on password sharing.

They’ve already tried it in other countries, and they’re “pleased with the results.”
