Brian “Red” Hamilton is thankful to start 2022.

Hamilton is the equipment manager of the NHL‘s Vancouver Canucks. During a recent road game versus the Seattle Kraken, a fan pointed out that Hamilton should get a mole on his neck checked out. He did, and it was a good thing.

On the team’s Twitter page, Hamilton posted, “The message you showed me on your cell phone will forever be etched into my brain and has made a true life-changing difference for me and my family. Your instincts were right, and that mole on the back of my neck was a malignant melanoma, and thanks to your persistence and the quick work of doctors, it is now gone.” Hamilton wanted to find the fan who made the medical discovery so he could express his “sincerest gratitude.”

The Kraken identified the woman as 22-year-old Nadia Popovici. She’s headed to medical school and has volunteered at hospitals.

On New Year’s Day, Popovici and Hamilton met before the Canucks-Kraken game. The teams rewarded Popovici with a $10,000 scholarship toward her education.
