On My Radar: Temper City – “Self Aware”
Every once in a while, a song comes along that makes me stop and think, “Oh, this could be big!”
That’s what happened when I heard Temper City and their debut single, “Self Aware.”
Temper City is a three-piece alternative rock band made up of Eytan Peled, Chen Kordova and Aviv Barenholtz. And while the band itself may still be a new name to most people, “Self Aware” has already made a pretty big impact.
The song went viral after Temper City began teasing it on TikTok, eventually reaching the Billboard Hot 100 and making Temper City the first Israeli band to ever appear on the chart.
But here’s what really caught my attention… the song doesn’t sound like it’s trying to be a viral hit.
“Self Aware” has this dark, atmospheric alternative-pop sound with a little bit of that moody indie-rock vibe that you might hear from bands like The Neighbourhood or Cage the Elephant. It’s catchy without feeling overly polished, and the production gives it a late-night, slightly mysterious feel.
Lyrically, it’s about the frustrating realization that sometimes you can be attracted to someone and enjoy the connection while knowing deep down that the relationship isn’t going anywhere. It’s that uncomfortable space between what you want to feel and what you already know to be true.
For a debut single, that’s a pretty impressive introduction. So if Temper City isn’t a name you’ve heard before, consider this your introduction.
