Ooltewah Elementary School is set to enhance its music education offerings thanks to a generous grant from the CMAs Foundation. The initiative, part of the Music Teacher of Excellence program, aims to expand opportunities for students across Tennessee and beyond, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.

The new funding will enable Ooltewah Elementary to acquire additional instruments and establish a music club, providing more students with the chance to participate in fine arts activities. Principal Sarah Yarbrough expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming improvements, saying, “Our goal is to add more instrumental and vocal performances as we grow our fine arts program next year.”

Music teacher Michael Perryman, who recently received the Music Teacher of Excellence award, shared his dedication to inspiring students. “Words can’t fully express how much teaching here means to me,” Perryman said. “Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this community.”

Perryman has been a beloved figure at Ooltewah Elementary for over 20 years, committed to nurturing lifelong learners through music. The award he received has contributed to funding the program’s expansion, allowing him to introduce new songs and resources to his students.

The school has also launched a fine arts club designed to keep students engaged regardless of whether they make a team or group initially. Principal Yarbrough emphasized the importance of continuous growth, stating, “We’re always looking for ways to give students more opportunities in the arts through clubs and other activities.”

Students and staff alike speak highly of Perryman’s passion and the nurturing environment he creates. His love for music and genuine care make him feel like family to many at Ooltewah Elementary.

As the school moves forward, it remains committed to enriching its fine arts offerings and inspiring the next generation of musicians and artists.
