Retiring Heroes: Chattanooga Police K9s Burt and Duke Honored for Service

The Chattanooga Police Department is celebrating the retirement of two dedicated K9 team members after years of service protecting the community. K9 Burt, an accomplished patrol and narcotics detection dog, and K9 Duke, whose career took a different turn, are both being honored for their contributions.
K9 Burt, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, concluded a decade of exemplary service. Throughout his career, Burt played a vital role in seizing more than $3 million worth of illegal drugs and currency. His most notable achievements include locating over 1,000 fentanyl pills across multiple cases, significantly aiding law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Burt’s handler, MPO Luke Timmons, highlighted the bond and reliability that Burt demonstrated over the years. Their partnership was particularly notable for its longevity, as Burt was trained and worked exclusively with Timmons, a rarity among police K9s. Burt also gained recognition beyond Chattanooga’s borders, earning top honors in regional police canine competitions. His performance in the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) events, especially in narcotics detection and dual-purpose certifications, underscored his exceptional skills. Despite a minor mishap during a vehicle-search event, Burt’s overall excellence was celebrated, and he remains a symbol of dedication and professionalism.
Meanwhile, K9 Duke’s journey was more modest but equally valued. Despite extensive training, Duke showed little interest in police work, leading to his early retirement. Originally acquired through grant funding, Duke’s career was cut short, and he was placed in a caring home where he can enjoy a relaxed retirement. His departure marks the department’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of all its K9 team members, regardless of their career trajectory.
The Chattanooga Police Department extends its gratitude to Burt and Duke for their service and recognizes the efforts of their handlers, families, and community supporters who contribute to the success of the K9 Unit. As both dogs begin their well-deserved retirements, the department wishes them health and happiness in their next chapter.
