The Salvation Army’s Ice Cream Social and Summer Heat Relief Program Bring Comfort and Community to Chattanooga

The Salvation Army of Chattanooga is gearing up for its Ice Cream Social, set to take place this Wednesday, July 22nd. Organized by the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, the event aims to bring together residents and neighbors, especially those experiencing homelessness, for an afternoon of treats and connection.
The event is scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the organization’s headquarters on 800 McCallie Avenue. Attendees can enjoy complimentary ice cream, alongside tasty sandwiches, in a welcoming environment. This gathering provides an opportunity for community members to engage with and support their unhoused neighbors, fostering a spirit of compassion and solidarity.
In addition to serving refreshments, the Women’s Auxiliary has prepared 70 hygiene kits, which will be distributed during the event. Their dedicated efforts exemplify the community’s kindness and commitment to caring for its most vulnerable members.
As the summer heat intensifies, with temperatures soaring past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the need for relief becomes more urgent. Many in the community lack access to air conditioning, making hot weather potentially dangerous. Recognizing this, The Salvation Army has launched its “Beat the Heat” program, which supplies fans and cooling items to those at greatest risk of heat-related illnesses. The program relies heavily on community support, with donations of new box fans, personal cooling products, and bottled water being essential.
Donations are accepted at the Salvation Army’s location on McCallie Avenue from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and all items must be new and in their original packaging. Through these efforts, The Salvation Army continues to serve as a vital resource for Chattanooga residents during the summer months, ensuring that no one has to face the heat alone.
