The Top 10 Sounds We Love to Hear, and The 10 We Hate

If you’re in this 5%, we’ll never see eye-to-eye.  Or is it ear-to-ear?

1,000 Americans were polled to find out what our favorite and least-favorite SOUNDS are.  And 5% …or 1 in 20 people … said nails on a chalkboard doesn’t bother them at all.

It is though the most universally hated sound. 12% said it’s only a little irritating, and 5% said “not irritating at all.”

Here are the ten sounds we hate the most…

1.  Nails on a chalkboard.  79% find it “somewhat” or “very” irritating.

2.  Chewing with your mouth open, 76%.

3.  Loud talking, 74%.

4.  When someone smacks their gum, 68%.

5.  Snoring, 67%.

6.  Slurping, 64%.

7.  FARTING, also 64%.

8.  Burping, 58%.

9.  Teeth-grinding, 55%.

10.  When someone clicks their tongue really loud, 54%.

The sound we find the most relaxing is RAIN80% of people agree a rainstorm is “somewhat” or “very” relaxing to them.

Here are the ten most relaxing sounds…

1.  Rain, 80%.

2.  Singing, 57%.  I assume they mean GOOD singing.

3.  A baby laughing, 55%.

4.  Water droplets, 50%.

5.  A ticking clock, 36%.

6.  A car engine humming, 33%.

7.  A person humming, 33%.

8.  Laughter in general, 30%.

9.  Pages turning in a book, 29%.

10.  The sound of a pencil on paper, 28%.
