Throwback Thursday

The #1 Song on February 3rd, 1992 was Right Said Fred‘s “I’m Too Sexy“.

At the time the group was made up of British brothers Rich and Fred Fairbrass and guitarist Rob Manzoli. The group was named after the 1962 song “Right Said Fred” by Bernard Cribbins.

The origin of the song started when at a dance studio that the Fairbrass Brothers owned, the brothers were goofing off and when one of them started posing in the mirror they kept repeating the phrase “I’m Too Sexy.” The brothers thought it was hilarious  and worked the phrase into a song.

The original version was actually a rock song but once it hit the ears of music promoter, Guy Holmes, he wanted to change it into a dance remix. The song still however did not get picked up by any labels, so Holmes created his own label just to release the song and the rest is history.

A fun fact about the song is that guitar riff is actually a sample of Jimi Hendrix‘s 1967 song, “Third Stone from the Sun.” The brothers at the time were not familiar with Jimi Hendrix’s deep cuts and they thought Manzoli write the riff. I wasn’t until they were sued by the Hendrix Estate did they give credit.
