Throwback Thursday

The #1 Song on January, 20th 1985 was Madonna‘s “Like A Virgin.”

This was Madonna’s first #1 hit in the United States and stayed there for 6 weeks.

The team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg wrote the song. Nile Rodgers produced and recorded it.

The title and lyrics were controversial, which made it difficult to find someone to record it, but at the time Madonna was known only as a “dance” singer, so her label invited the controversy. It created a new edgier image for Madonna and really separated her apart from other singers.

Usually when an artist has a breakout hit, they will go back to where it came from but Madonna never recorded another Kelly/Steinberg song. She rejected their offers to write her another song and rumor was, it was because Madonna was a bit resentful that her signature song was not written by her in any capacity. In fact, Madonna’s people tried to get her added to the writing credits of the song but Kelly and Steinberg said no.

Madonna performed the song for the first time on September 18, 1984 at the very first MTV Video Music Awards. She wore a wedding dress and belt buckle that said “Boy Toy“. Much like the song, the performance was controversial and arguably the most recognized performance from MTV VMA history.
