Throwback Thursday

The #1 Song on January 6th, 2000 was “What A Girl Wants” by Christina Aguilera.

Shelly Peiken and Guy Roche wrote the song together after Peiken wrote a few lyrics on the back of a receipt, when she inspired by one of her past relationships.

The song was originally named “What A Girl Needs” with the lyric “what a girl needs, what a girl wants” but RCA thought that “needs” sounded too “needy” (no pun intended) and they had them rewrite the lyrics as “what a girl wants, what a girls needs.” Plus, they also wanted to give the title some alliteration between the “what a” and “wants”.

The song was off of Christina’s debut album and was the follow up song to the first single, “Genie In A Bottle.” Both songs went number one as well as “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)”, giving her three number ones from her debut.
