Four Mistakes to Avoid at a New Job

A bunch of career experts came up with a list of the worst mistakes you can make at a new job.  (And somehow, schtupping the boss’s wife didn’t make the list.)  Here are their top four . . .

1.  Pretending you know everything.  You might worry you’ll seem incompetent if you ask too many questions.  But ignore that instinct, and ask away,  Not asking questions will just slow you down and keep you from learning how things operate.

2.  Being anti-social.  Don’t be shy and isolate yourself.  Put yourself out there and talk to people, or you might miss opportunities to build connections.  You don’t want them saying things like, “Has ANYONE talked to the new guy yet?”

3.  Badmouthing your old job.  People pick up on negativity fast, and it makes a bad first impression.  Try to be positive and treat your new job like a fresh start.

4.  Talking about how things were done better at your old job.  It’s tempting to draw on old experiences to help make improvements.  Just be careful you don’t do it too much, especially right away.  Your new co-workers might start seeing you as an outsider instead of a new teammate.
