Reflection Riding in Hamilton County is seeking community input to name a unique new arrival in their raptor program—a rare red-tailed hawk with distinctive white plumage.
The bird is a leucistic red-tailed hawk, a condition that results in partial loss of pigmentation, giving her an eye-catching white appearance that makes her stand out from typical hawks of the same species.
According to Reflection Riding staff, leucism involves a reduction in pigmentation affecting feathers, skin, or scales, but unlike albinism, the bird’s eyes and some skin areas maintain their normal coloration. This striking feature has prompted the organization to invite the public to participate in naming the unusual hawk.
Community members interested in contributing a name can submit their suggestions via an online form here. Several of the submitted names will be shortlisted and displayed on a public ballot next week, allowing the community to vote for their favorite.
The individual whose chosen name wins will earn recognition and receive a complimentary ticket to Winged Wisdom, Reflection Riding’s educational program focused on raptors.
