Multiple Olympic Medals Break During Celebrations At Winter Games

Multiple Olympic medals broke within hours of being awarded during the opening weekend of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Gold medalist Breezy Johnson warned athletes after hers broke during celebrations following her women’s downhill ski victory Sunday. “Don’t jump in them. I was jumping in excitement, and it broke,” Johnson said. German biathlete Justus Strelow’s mixed relay bronze medal fell off its ribbon and clattered to the floor while dancing with teammates, with TV footage capturing the moment. The clasp had broken off completely. U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu also posted social media footage showing her team event gold medal detached from its ribbon. Andrea Francisi, chief games operations officer for Milan Cortina organizing committee, said officials are investigating with “maximum attention” and working on solutions.
