In The Know with Gino…

The Creative Discovery Museum has unveiled a new hands-on exhibit, “Measurement Rules,” which invites visitors of all ages to explore the fascinating world of measurement through playful and innovative activities. Running from now through September 13, 2026, the exhibit offers a variety of engaging stations designed to teach concepts of length, time, volume, and weight in fun and surprising ways.

Developed by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and sponsored locally by Volkswagen Chattanooga, “Measurement Rules” challenges traditional notions of measurement by encouraging visitors to think beyond standard tools. Instead of just rulers and scales, guests can experiment with balancing scales, odometers, calipers, 3-D imaging, and even counting “Mississippis” to understand how we quantify the world around us.

Highlights of the exhibit include the “Height Wall,” where visitors can determine their height in apples or pennies, and the “Foot Ruler,” which turns your foot into a custom unit of measurement. There’s also a treadmill odometer that tracks how far guests walk, and a giant tape measure used to size up a mural of a giant fish. Young explorers can test their internal clocks by counting to five Mississippi, or build their own ball ramp to explore speed and motion.

In the volume section, visitors can see themselves represented as cubic-inch blocks on a screen or experiment with volume at an open-ended bead table. For weight, there’s a chicken scale to find out how many chickens a guest weighs, as well as a large balance scale to learn about balancing objects with standard weights.

Plan your visit to “Measurement Rules” at the Creative Discovery Museum and enjoy exploring measurement in a whole new way. For more information, visit cdmfun.org.
