The reopening of Chattanooga’s largest skate park has been postponed until December, according to city officials. The Chatt Town Skate Park, which closed last November for extensive renovations, was initially expected to unveil its upgraded concrete design this fall. However, recent adverse weather conditions have caused delays in the construction schedule.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, City spokesperson Brian Smith indicated that the project is approximately 70% complete. He noted that upcoming tasks include finishing the bathroom facilities, installing lighting and a bouldering area, and focusing on landscaping and the development of a new dog park. The revamped skate park will also feature areas equipped for food vendors and shaded structures throughout the concrete layout.

The city allocated a budget of $4.4 million for the project. Of this, about $2.3 million is dedicated to non-skating amenities such as restrooms, lighting, and landscaping, while $2.1 million is allocated for skate-specific features like ramps, rails, and pathways. A $500,000 grant from the state, aimed at revitalizing abandoned properties, contributes to the funding, with the remainder financed by Chattanooga.

In addition to these improvements, a significant private investment is underway. The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation pledged $4.8 million to develop a BlueCross Healthy Place park adjacent to the skate park. This investment is helping finance construction costs for surrounding non-skating amenities and will also fund the creation of an “airnasium“—a covered structure over an existing skating rink, designed to provide shade and protection from the elements. Design plans for the airnasium are still being finalized, with an expected completion date at the end of 2027. During construction, both the skate and dog parks will remain accessible to the public.

The new skate park was designed and built by California Skateparks, a renowned global firm responsible for multiple professional skate parks, including the one used during the 2024 Paris Olympics. This marks the third project the company has completed in Tennessee, following facilities in Knoxville and Nashville.

Historically, the original Chatt Town Skate Park, which opened in 2000, was built using a material called Skatelite—a durable, weather-resistant composite. However, over time, maintenance issues arose due to the challenges of renovating Skatelite, prompting a shift toward concrete. Skaters and local advocates now see concrete as the preferred material for future skate parks, offering easier upkeep and a more authentic street skating experience. The upcoming renovations aim to bring Chattanooga’s skate scene to new heights, with many hopeful that the improved park will serve as a hub for community activity and skating culture.
