Stella Lefty Faces Back-to-Back Interpolation Controversies

Stella Lefty recently had to give Noah Kahan songwriting credit on “Boston” because of its similarity to his song “Stick Season” after fans pointed it out.

Well, she did it again.

Her song “Summer You Were Mine” interpolates The Chicks’ “There’s Your Trouble”.  The songwriters have now been added to the credits after fans, once again…pointed it out.

According to Rolling Stone… interpolation involves modifying an existing melody or lyric, rather than directly sampling a song without changes. It has become increasingly common in recent years.

For instance, Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” reimagined “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music into a beat-heavy pop track, while Taylor Swift’s “Father Figure” drew inspiration from George Michael’s song of the same name.

Like sampling, interpolation is a proven way to connect with listeners who are already familiar with the melody, making it a popular songwriting technique.

In a recent Vanity Fair article, Lefty mentioned that she had no trouble crediting Noah Kahan as a co-songwriter when his team reached out before the song’s release. “When I was writing the song, I wasn’t thinking about Noah Kahan,” said the 24-year-old. “I was literally thinking about nothing at all… I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, so if it sounds like that, whatever—it’s all good.”

Some fans remain skeptical of Stella’s claims, especially now that she’s been involved in similar situations twice.
