Curious about how police officers are trained or interested in learning more about the criminal justice system? The Chattanooga Police Department is now accepting applications for its popular Community Police Academy, a free nine-week program designed to foster positive interactions and transparency between law enforcement and the community.
Since its inception in 1999, the Community Police Academy has aimed to build trust and understanding by providing citizens aged 21 and over with an insider’s perspective on police work. Participants get the chance to experience demonstrations such as K9 unit displays, driving simulators, and engaging discussions about various aspects of law enforcement.
The program meets once a week from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Police Services Center located at 3410 Amnicola Highway. Over the course of nine weeks, attendees receive instruction on multiple police-related topics, participate in interactive activities, and engage in open dialogue with officers. It’s an opportunity to learn about the challenges and responsibilities faced by law enforcement officers firsthand.
While the academy offers a comprehensive look into police procedures and the criminal justice system, it’s important to note that graduates are not trained or authorized to perform police services. Instead, the program emphasizes community engagement and education.
The academy concludes with a graduation ceremony, where participants receive certificates recognizing their completion of the program. Alumni of the Community Police Academy often speak highly of their experiences, encouraging others to apply and fostering ongoing positive relationships with local residents.
Applications are open through Friday, February 27th. Interested citizens are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this unique opportunity to better understand their local police department and contribute to a safer, more connected community. Click HERE for more information and to apply!
