Issa Rae Honors Aaliyah With 'Queen Of The Damned' Tribute

On the latest episode of HBO Max's ballroom competition series Legendary, Insecure actress Issa Rae wowed the crowd with her tribute to late Aaliyah. Keeping with the "Whorror House" theme, Rae wore a costume emulating Aaliyah's character in the 2002 film The Queen of the Damned.

In May of 2001, Aaliyah told Entertainment Tonight, "I had a lot of fun doing Queen of the Damned. I was very excited to be part of a vampire film, because I've been a lover of vampires since I was very young. And not only was this a vampire film — it was Anne Rice."

Fans knew exactly who Rae was honoring when she came out in the replica ensemble, including the signature crown. Many took to Twitter to share appreciation for the remembrance.

Judge Denies Johnny Depp's Request To Dismiss Amber Heard's Countersuit

On Tuesday (May 24th), Amber Heard's legal team wrapped up their defense in Johnny Depp's defamation trial. Following this, Depp's legal team filed a motion to dismiss Heard's $100 million countersuit.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million for an op-ed she wrote about surviving domestic violence for the Washington Post in 2018, although she didn't name the Pirates of the Caribbean actor by name. Heard filed a $100 million countersuit, claiming Depp sought to discredit her and her allegations as "fake" and a "hoax," thereby damaging her reputation and her career.

Attorney Ben Chew argued that public statements made by Depp's attorney Adam Waldman in 2020, which Heard's countersuit is based on, don't show that Depp "participated" in or "authorized" the comments. "There's no evidence that Mr. Depp even saw the statements by Mr. Waldman until he was sued," said Chew.

Ultimately, Judge Penney Azcarate denied the motion by Depp's legal team to dismiss Heard's countersuit.

Ricky Gervais' Netflix Special Criticized For Anti-Trans Jokes

People are not happy with Ricky Gervais or Netflix now that his comedy special SuperNature is available on the streaming platform. The British Office creator is in hot water for his transphobic remarks, with many calling for a boycott of the special and some cancelling their Netflix subscriptions outright.

In the special, Gervais says, "Oh, women! Not all women, I mean the old-fashioned ones. The old-fashioned women, the ones with wombs. Those fucking dinosaurs. I love the new women. They're great, aren't they? The new ones we've been seeing lately. The ones with beards and cocks. They're as good as gold, I love them."

He continues, "And now the old-fashioned ones say, ‘Oh, they want to use our toilets.' ‘Why shouldn't they use your toilets?' ‘For ladies!' ‘They are ladies — look at their pronouns! What about this person isn't a lady?' ‘Well, his penis.' ‘Her penis, you f—king bigot!' ‘What if he rapes me?' ‘What if she rapes you, you f—king TERF wh—e?'"

Needless to say, Gervais is ruffling many feathers. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) tweeted on Tuesday (May 24th), "We watched the Ricky Gervais ‘comedy' special on Netflix so you don't have to. It's full of graphic, dangerous, anti-trans rants masquerading as jokes."

In a follow-up tweet, the organization called out Netflix for supporting comedians like Gervais and Dave Chappelle: "Netflix has a policy that content ‘designed to incite hate or violence' is not allowed on their platform, but we all know that anti-LGBTQ content does exactly that. While Netflix is home to some groundbreaking LGBTQ shows, it refuses to enforce its own policy in comedy."
