Today’s “In The Know with Gino”… The Chattanooga Public Works Department is wrapping up 2023 with a remarkable achievement, marking it as the most productive year under the current administration in terms of roadway repairs, pothole filling, and paving initiatives.

Officials announced that the city saw significant progress, surpassing the accomplishments of the previous year.

Throughout 2023, Chattanooga Public Works successfully paved an impressive 66 lane miles of roadways, a notable increase from the 60 lane miles achieved in 2022. Moreover, the diligent efforts of the department led to the repair of over 18,000 potholes, cracks, and divots, surpassing the 2022 count of nearly 16,000.

In a cumulative effort, the city has resurfaced approximately 200 lane miles, enhancing the overall quality of road networks for residents. Officials clarified that lane miles, a crucial metric in road maintenance, are calculated by multiplying the centerline miles by the number of lanes, excluding shoulders.

With a total of more than 50,000 potholes, cracks, and divots addressed during the year, Chattanooga Public Works has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the safety and infrastructure of the city’s roads.

As the colder months settle in, the paving season has come to a temporary halt. This is due to the challenges posed by low temperatures affecting the application of paint used for re-striping. However, officials are optimistic about the forthcoming spring season when paving activities are set to resume.

Residents can anticipate upcoming road improvement projects in the spring, including scheduled work on prominent streets such as S. Holtzclaw Avenue, Douglas Street, and Curtis Street. The remarkable achievements of 2023 highlight the dedication of Chattanooga Public Works to maintaining and enhancing the city’s infrastructure, ensuring a smoother and safer experience for all residents and commuters.
