Chattanooga announces a new opportunity for local artists to contribute to the revitalization of the Westside neighborhood through a public art project. The city is inviting artists to submit proposals for a large-scale mural to be painted on the James A. Henry Hub at 1200 Grove Street. This initiative aims to transform the building into a vibrant community landmark that reflects the spirit and aspirations of the Westside residents.

The mural will replace previous artwork removed during recent redevelopment efforts. City officials, in partnership with the Housing Authority and ONE Westside, are seeking talented artists over 18 years old to bring this vision to life. The selected artist will work closely with the community and fellow artists to ensure the artwork embodies local values and cultural identity.

Application submissions are open until May 3rd, with the selection process concluding by May 28th. Interested artists are encouraged to include their resumes, a statement of interest, and 8 to 10 samples of their work with their applications. The project budget is set at $40,000, funded through a HUD Choice Neighborhoods grant, and the mural installation is scheduled for this fall. To apply click here.

The project aims to create an iconic and inspiring centerpiece that celebrates the Westside’s cultural vibrancy, educational opportunities, and community spirit. The final design will be developed collaboratively, encouraging community input and reflecting the neighborhood’s goals and aspirations.

This public art effort was identified as a priority during the community planning process led by ONE Westside, emphasizing the importance of arts and culture in neighborhood revitalization. City officials hope that the new mural will serve as a motivational symbol of community pride and a visual representation of the neighborhood’s unique character.
