The first Whataburger location in the Chattanooga area officially opened its doors in East Ridge on Monday, marking the fast-food chain’s debut in the community. Situated at the site of the former Wally’s Restaurant at 6521 Ringgold Road, the new restaurant is currently serving customers drive through only.

The grand opening attracted a steady flow of patrons eager to try the Texas-based burger chain’s signature offerings.

On opening day, the restaurant experienced a busy start, with many customers ordering the popular original Whataburger, known for its large size and made-from-fresh beef and vegetables. The 5-inch-diameter burger’s name is derived from the phrase “What a burger!” reflecting its impressive size and flavor.

In addition to the classic burger, other favorites quickly gained popularity. While the dining area, which seats 47, is expected to open in the coming weeks, the exact date remains uncertain due to various factors. Currently, the restaurant employs approximately 100 staff members, with plans for ongoing hiring as operations expand.

A second local location is already slated to open in March at 2332 Shallowford Village Drive, replacing a former Fazoli’s restaurant.
