If you’re looking for an easy dinner tonight, you’re in luck: It’s National Sloppy Joe Day.
The origin of the Sloppy Joe isn’t 100% clear. One claim says it started in Havana, Cuba in 1920, when a bartender named José “Sloppy Joe” Otero created it as a simple sandwich version of a local dish called “ropa vieja,” which features shredded beef, tomato sauce, and spices.
Whether that’s where it came from or not, it became increasingly popular in the 1960s…and in 1969, Hunt’s introduced “Manwich,” which made Sloppy Joes way more convenient to make.
By the way, a poll online asked, “How do you like your Sloppy Joes, open or closed?” 84% of people say they like it “closed,” or with two pieces of bread, like normal. The other 16% say they prefer it as an open-faced sandwich.
