Kids Start Practicing Deception at 10 Months Old

A study just found that about a quarter of children understand deception by 10 months old.  And by 17 months, it’s about half of all children. Here’s what the lead author of the study had to say, “As a mother of three children myself, I can certainly vouch for how artful and wily they can be.”

The researchers found that kids’ sneaky behavior ramps up fast.  By age two, it’s simple stuff like pretending not to hear you or hiding things.  But by three, it gets more advanced.  Kids start making excuses, exaggerating, and even blaming imaginary people.

Experts say this deception is normal.  It’s just how kids learn to understand the world.  (And most politicians too.)
