Team USA snagged six more medals yesterday, including a very big GOLD for the women’s gymnastics team.

Simone Biles led the way on a calf injury to help win yesterday’s team final.  She had to drop out four years ago in Tokyo after getting the “twisties,” and we ended up with silver that time.  So taking the gold back was a big deal.

It also made Biles the most decorated American gymnast in history, with eight Olympic medals.  She’d been tied with Shannon Miller, who won seven in 1992 and 1996.

Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union still holds the record for all gymnasts with 18.  Michael Phelps holds the overall record with 28.

That was the only gold for Team USA on Tuesday.  So we ended the day still trailing with four golds, and Japan led with seven.  But the U.S. did extend its lead in the overall medal count.

We added three silvers and a bronze in swimming, plus a bronze medal in women’s rugby.  It’s the first time we’ve ever medaled in that event.  It was added to the Olympics in 2016.

After Day 4 of the Summer Olympics, the U.S. led with 26 total medals.  Then France with 18, China 14, Japan 13, and Great Britain 12.
