‘Rucking’ Walking Trend Combines Cardio With Resistance Training
A new fitness trend called “rucking” transforms regular walks by adding weighted backpacks for enhanced health benefits. “Rucking is simply just walking with weight on your body … weight on your back, technically,” said Nichele Cihlar, director of training at GORUCK. The practice stems from military training methods, combining cardiovascular exercise with resistance training, helping meet weekly strength recommendations while improving heart efficiency and posture. Resistance training becomes crucial as muscle mass naturally decreases starting in the thirties. Beginners should start with five to ten pounds and one-mile distances, while experienced exercisers can handle twenty to thirty pounds. “You’re going to always say you never come back from a ruck in a bad mood,” Cihlar said, highlighting mental health benefits from outdoor exercise.
