The “Smart Cookie” Challenge with Troop 40180 of the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians
The Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians are hosting cookie booths for just a few more weekends, ending March 16th. To find the nearest booth, cookie lovers can log on to iwantcookies.org.
Earlier this afternoon, local Girl Scout Troop 40180 joined Gino D on The Afternoon Show and Assistant Troop Leader Jessica gave us a full rundown on why the Girl Scouts sell these cookies, why it’s so important, what they use the money for and more. Listen below!
Then some of the Girl Scouts themselves took on the “Smart Cookie” Challenge in order to win some “cookie buys” from the Hits 96 Staff. It was a game of Pop Music Trivia and was played with “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” rules.
Kennedy, Evie, and Grayson of the troop had hopes to win over $100 in cookie sales! Click below to find out how they did!
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is more than just a delectable fundraiser; it’s an essential lifeline for the organization, generating approximately 70% of the revenue required to support Girl Scout activities in the area. The funds raised through cookie sales enable young girls to engage in a myriad of experiences – from arts and crafts to robotics and horseback riding – and help them work towards earning badges in different skills.
Notably, about 64% of women in leadership roles were once Girl Scouts, showcasing the program’s profound impact on fostering future female leaders.
Not only does the cookie program provide delicious treats, but it also serves as a valuable educational tool that imparts essential entrepreneurial skills.
The cookie sales contribute directly to local troops, funding activities, field trips, community service projects, and essential materials. A portion of the proceeds also supports the Girl Scout council’s nonprofit initiatives, including camp and volunteer programming.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is widely recognized as the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world, with iconic flavors like Thin Mints® and Samoas, whose popularity demonstrates immense community support. Thin Mints remain the area’s best-selling cookie, while Samoas follow closely behind. This season marks the last chance to purchase the popular S’mores cookie before its retirement, with other options including gluten-free Toffee-tastic® and vegan Thin Mints®.
For those unable to indulge themselves, cookies can still be purchased to donate to Operation Appreciation, which supports overseas military personnel, first responders, and local organizations.
Parents, it’s never too late to get involved with Girl Scouts! Girls can join the organization year-round by texting JOIN to 59618 or visiting ExploreGirlScouts.org.
With research indicating that 53% of female entrepreneurs and business owners are Girl Scout alumni, this cookie season promotes vital business skills that contribute to a robust workforce and economy. Women currently own 42% of small businesses in the U.S., reflecting the lasting impact of programs like Girl Scouts on future generations.
This cookie season, join in the fun and support local troops by purchasing a box (or several) of these beloved treats. After all, when you buy cookies from a Girl Scout, you’re investing in the empowerment of young women and the future of communities across the nation!
