If you’re looking to improve your communication skills this year, listen up.  We’ve got two tips that’ll help you appear more intelligent and confident when talking to people . . .

1.  Steer clear from big words.  Using large, complex words might make you FEEL smarter . . . but it’s not how it comes across to other people.

A study found that writers who used unnecessary big words were seen as less intelligent than ones who used simpler words.

In general, it’s better to keep things simple and conversational unless you’re in a place where formality matters, like a courtroom.

2.  Slow down your speech.  Everyone has a natural speaking cadence, and it’s hard to change . . . especially when you you’re passionate about the subject. But talking too quickly can make you come across as nervous or curt.

At the same time, don’t go overboard, since dialing your pace back too much can come off as patronizing.
