Chattanooga, TN – Music enthusiasts are in for a treat as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and the Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts String Orchestra join forces for a captivating FREE public concert. The event is set to take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, at the UTC Fine Arts Center’s Roland Hayes Concert Hall.
Led by the talented UTC Symphony Orchestra Conductor Sandy Morris, the 60-member college/community orchestra boasts a diverse lineup of University music majors, faculty, local music educators, and skilled amateur and professional musicians. Their performance promises to be a mesmerizing experience, featuring Georges Bizet‘s “Carmen Suites 1 and 2” and Johannes Brahms‘ “Tragic Overture.”
Bizet’s “Carmen Suites,” meticulously edited by Fritz Hoffmann, offer a glimpse into the enchanting world of Bizet’s groundbreaking opera, “Carmen.” Set in a Spanish cigarette factory, the opera narrates the scandalous tale of a gypsy girl’s passionate liaisons and has become beloved for its exquisite melodies and vivid orchestration. This performance bridges the gap between French opera comique and the realism of late 19th-century Italian opera, showcasing Bizet’s masterful expression of complex emotions.
In stark contrast, Brahms’ “Tragic Overture,” composed in 1880, stands as a testament to the composer’s genius. While not inspired by personal tragedy, Brahms crafted this piece as a counterpoint to his jovial “Academic Festival Overture.” Written in D minor, the composition weaves powerful themes with moments of quiet reflection, encapsulating the essence of a free-standing symphony movement.
Adding to the evening’s allure, the Chattanooga High Center for Creative Arts String Orchestra, under the guidance of Conductor Jessica Stansbury, will grace the stage with selections from their fall performance, “Bach and Roll.” Audiences can anticipate renditions of Johann Sebastian Bach‘s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” and the captivating “Brandenburg” by Black Violin, showcasing the remarkable talent of these young musicians.
“We are happy to welcome the Chattanooga High Center for Creative Arts String Orchestra to open our concert,” expressed Morris. “Jessica Stansbury has done an amazing job with the orchestra since I retired from there in 2011, and this is a great opportunity to showcase their fine work.”
The concert, promising an evening of musical brilliance, is open to the public. Free parking is available in the nearby Lupton Hall parking garage, with both the garage and the Roland Hayes Concert Hall being handicap accessible. Don’t miss this exceptional collaboration between seasoned professionals and budding talents, set to enchant audiences with a symphonic spectacle on November 12th.
