Grandma Turns 100!

Mejra Halilovic
Bosnian woman Mejra Halilovic, right, gesture as she celebrate her 100th birthday, in her small house in Bosnian town of Kladanj, 80 kms. North of Sarajevo, on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. Halilovic has lived through Bosnia's turbulent history and has survived three wars and seen the collapse of four countries. She was born when Bosnia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire the year its archduke was assassinated in Sarajevo which triggered World War 1. When that war ended Bosnia was part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until 1941 when it was occupied by Nazi Germany. It was liberated in 1945 and became part of communist Yugoslavia, which then fell apart in the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, when Bosnia declared independence. (AP Photo/Amel Emric)

A surprise party for someone this old is a tad risky, but it worked out:  A woman in California named Bonnie Rakes turned 100 last month, and a video of her arriving at her party is making the rounds online.  Relatives from all over the country showed up to surprise her.

(Here’s the video.)
