Blood Assurance is issuing an urgent plea to the community today, as their platelet supply has reached a critically low level. Officials are emphasizing the immediate need for donors to step forward and help replenish this vital resource.

Platelets, essential components of blood that help with clotting, have a remarkably short shelf life of just five days. This means that Blood Assurance relies on a constant flow of donations to maintain adequate levels and meet the ongoing demand.

The impact of this shortage is particularly dire for a vulnerable patient population: cancer patients. Chemotherapy, a common treatment for cancer, often severely compromises a patient’s ability to produce healthy platelets. Without regular platelet transfusions, these individuals face significant and potentially life-threatening risks, including internal bleeding and increased susceptibility to infections.

“The need for platelets is constant, and right now, it’s at a critical point,” stated Brooke Katz, Blood Assurance Media Relations Coordinator. “We are urging everyone who is eligible to consider donating platelets as soon as possible.
