As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, local hospitals are facing a critical shortage of blood, with donations falling short of the demand. Blood Assurance, the nonprofit blood center serving the Chattanooga area, is stepping up efforts to encourage community donors by offering $40 e-gift cards to all individuals who donate blood, platelets, or plasma between NOW and July 7th.
The call for donors comes at a time when hospitals are preparing for increased trauma cases related to holiday festivities, travel accidents, and other emergencies. However, summer vacations, travel plans, and holiday celebrations often lead to a decline in blood donations, creating a challenging situation for local healthcare providers.
Recent days have seen Blood Assurance operating with less than a one-day supply of blood products, including critical components like platelets and plasma. Health officials emphasize that a two- to three-day supply is needed to ensure hospitals can respond effectively to everyday needs and emergencies.
Blood Assurance primarily supplies local hospitals in the Chattanooga area, meaning community donations directly impact patient care. Donors of all blood types are urged to step forward during this urgent period.
In addition to the $40 e-gift card, donors will have the opportunity to select from a variety of participating retailers, including gas stations and grocery stores. For type O donors, there’s an added incentive through Blood Assurance’s Hero Club — a program that rewards those who donate double red cells with a $50 gift card. This means that during the promotion period, an O-negative donor could potentially earn up to $90 for a single double red cell donation.
O-negative blood is particularly valuable because it can be used for emergency transfusions when there’s no time to determine a patient’s blood type. O-positive blood, the most common blood type, is also heavily utilized by hospitals.
Interested donors can schedule an appointment via bloodassurance.org, call 800-962-0628, or text BAGIVE to 999777. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. It’s recommended to eat a hearty meal and stay well-hydrated before donating.
By donating now, community members can help ensure that local hospitals are prepared to care for patients in need during the busy summer months. Every donation saves lives and supports the health of the Chattanooga community.
